Russia’s biggest box office hit in 1997, Aleksei Balabanov’s (DEAD MAN’S BLUFF) BROTHER forms an American-style criminal flick mixed with a pointed social consciousness. Danila (Sergei Bodrov, Jr.) returns as a consequence of army service to some St. Petersburg transformed into a casual civilization high adjacent to music and consumerism. The chaotic atmosphere, carefully depicted by Balabanov’s moody camerawork, smoothly invites the smug, belligerent Danila into selected world of crime. Soon the youth is accompanying that person’s brother Viktor, a contract killer for the Russian underworld, on violent escapades at which wads touching on earnings and unique well-gripped gun belong the ultimate symbols of authority. Bodrov’s cynical, brutal functioning, reminiscent of tough-guy roles from countless Hollywood mob movies, next conveys the sense that 1990’s St. Petersburg appears minus a far cry from from the blood-strewn Chicago of the late 1920s. And like Bogart and Cagney, Bodrov makes his morally challenged hero strangely likeable. Russian with English subtitles.
